George Durham Manson, 64, a veteran of nearly 43 years' service here with R. R. Donnelley & Sons, Inc., and traffic manager of the printing firm, died suddenly of a heart attack at 7:45 p.m. Friday at his home, 736 Sugar Tree Rd. Mr. and Mrs. Manson had returned only Tuesday from a trip to Mexico, and he had gone fishing Friday afternoon at the Sportsmen's Club lake near here. He was close to the time of retirement from the company in which he was one of the first persons hired when it set up operations in this city in 1921. Mr. Manson was born July 3, 1900 in Crawfordsville, a son of Mahlon Frederick and Louisa Lewis Manson. His paternal grandfather, Mahlon D. Manson, was the Civil War general whose old homestead recently was razed to make way for a business development on West Market Street. He was wed to Mary Whittington in September 1921. She survives. Mr. Manson was a member of the First Methodist Church, Montgomery Lodge 50, F&AM, Shrine, Scottish and York Rites, Eastern Star, Rotary Club and also the Military Order of Loyal Legion of America at Indianapolis. He was a past president of Rotary here and edited the publication Spokes & Cogs. Engaged in many civic undertakings, he was a school board member three terms. A 1919 graduate of Crawfordsville High School, he attended Wabash College and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Later he served as grand praetor of the fraternity nationally and locally was its chapter adviser since 1929. He was honored in 1958 as "Hoosier Sigma Chi of the Year." Surviving besides his wife are a son, G. David Manson of Brownsburg; a daughter, Mrs. Alan B. Telford of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Paul Manson of LaPorte, and three grandchildren, Scott, Sandra and Sharon Manson. Funeral services are announced for 3 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Hunt and Son Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Saturday.
